What Is an EU Battery Passport?

The EU Battery Passport is a digital record linked to an individual battery, designed to improve transparency and sustainability throughout its lifecycle. It provides access to information on battery identification, technical characteristics, performance and durability, sustainability, repair, reuse and recycling, with access rights depending on the user and the applicable legal requirements.

From 18 February 2027, the passport will be mandatory for electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport batteries and industrial batteries with a capacity above 2 kWh placed on the EU market.

Each passport will be linked to the battery through a QR code and unique identifier, while detailed information will be maintained in a decentralised system. The economic operator placing the finished battery on the EU market is responsible for creating and maintaining the passport, although authorised service providers may support its technical operation and data management.

From Test Data to Battery Passport Records

During road, winter, range and endurance testing, the Battery Management System — BMS — produces technical data such as voltage, current, temperature, State of Charge, State of Health and fault records.

SHiC’s integration middleware converts these different data streams into structured, traceable and passport-ready records, without requiring major changes to the vehicle’s core electronic systems. The current technical concept supports CANOpen, Modbus, MQTT and REST-based data collection, together with data normalisation, signing, encryption and offline buffering.

Road-test data supports the performance and lifecycle sections of a Battery Passport. It does not replace material, carbon-footprint, manufacturing or supply-chain documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Battery Passport an EU certification certificate?
No. It is a digital product and lifecycle information record. It does not replace vehicle certification, type approval or conformity assessment.

Must all raw BMS data be uploaded continuously?
No. Relevant indicators may be updated at agreed intervals or after defined events. Raw second-by-second data does not normally need to appear directly in the passport.

Does the Battery Passport contain only BMS data?
No. It may also require manufacturing, material, carbon-footprint, supply-chain, repair, reuse and recycling information.

Who remains responsible for compliance?
The relevant economic operator placing the battery or vehicle on the European Union market retains final regulatory responsibility.
